THE BRONX, NY — An 11-month-old baby girl was shot in the face just a few days before her first birthday, police said.
The baby was shot in the cheek while sitting in a parked car near East 19th Street and Valentine about 6:50 p.m., said Deputy Chief Timothy McCormack at a press conference.
McCormack said, "The officers found a mother holding her 11-month old baby."
Mayor Eric Adams tweeted a photo of himself being briefed by police, standing near a small pink puffy jacket stained red.
"If that's not a wake up call,"Adams wrote, "I don't know what is."
The baby was shot by a man who'd been chasing another down Valentine Avenue then jumped into a car and sped away, police said. They are offering a $3,500 reward to anyone who can identify the suspect.
The NYPD's 52nd precinct released photos Thursday of a suspect believed to have shot the 11-month-old baby girl. The baby was intubated at St. Barnabas Hospital and kept in critical but serious condition at Cornell Medical Center, police said Wednesday night.
Update: The baby's mother returned from the hospital Thursday with hopeful words for the New York Post reporters waiting outside her door: "She's stable," Miraida Gomez, 32, reportedly said of her daughter Catherine. "She's going to be OK."
