Much of this unique wetland is protected within Everglades National Park, which in 2022 is celebrating the 75th anniversary of its dedication by President Harry S Truman as a park featuring not geologic grandeur, but its biology - its tropical forests and sawgrass covered marshes, alligators and crocodiles, Florida panthers and West Indian manatees, roseate spoonbills and anhingas, wood storks and egrets. It was egrets, or rather their delicate courtship plumes decorating ladies’ hats of the late 1800s, and majestic royal palms that jump-started the movement by the women’s clubs of Florida to save their wetlands as a park. But long before for thousands of years, the Everglades was home to indigenous people and holds the stories of these peoples beneath the peat of its tree islands. The Everglades also holds the stories of more recent people, the indigenous Tequesta, Spanish and British colonialists, Mikisúkî-speaking Indians and the soldiers who sought their expulsion, pioneer settlers, outlaws, environmental activists, scientists, and generations of south Florida’s residents, and park visitors. Join Dr. James A. Kushlan and Kirsten Hines as they share the stories of the Everglades and its park from their recently-published book Everglades National Park.
