MILWAUKEE, WI — A Milwaukee County court set a $100,000 bail on Wednesday for Dionta'e Hayes, 18, whom police said was involved in an off-duty police detective's shooting on Jan. 13. Hayes faces six charges after police said he and two other teens shot Milwaukee police detective Andrew Wilkiewicz, 37, after a botched carjacking and robbery in the city's Third Ward neighborhood. Hayes' charges include driving a car without the consent of the owner, trying to take a car without the consent of the owner, harboring a felon, resisting an officer and two counts of bail jumping, according to court records. The 18-year-old was driving in a stolen car with Timonte Karroll-Robinson, 17, and Keasean Ellis-Brown, 18, when the three orchestrated an attempt to steal a Door Dash driver's car outside the Shake Shack restaurant on E. Buffalo Street, the criminal complaint said. The attempted carjacking led to an attempted robbery, where Wilkiewicz intervened before the shooting, according to police. Surveillance footage showed Ellis-Brown firing a handgun into the restaurant before running away, the complaint said. The bullets that struck Wilkiewicz barely missed his heart. Wilkiewicz was met with applause from family and friends when he was released from Froedtert Hospital on Tuesday. Ellis-Brown posted a $1,000 bond in November 2021 after being charged with fleeing the police in a car, recklessly endangering safety and resisting a police officer. Hayes had a $500 bond set for driving a car without the consent of the driver and resisting a police officer, court records showed. Milwaukee County District Attorney John T. Chisholm and Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers have been the targets of fiery criticism from Waukesha-area lawmakers related to low bail amounts. A letter from 14 Republican state legislators called Evers' hiring of an outside legal counsel "cowardly" and demanded an investigation for the county district attorney. A conservative group called Empower Wisconsin petitioned Evers in December 2021 to remove Chisholm from office. The group cited Darrell Brooks, 39, who was out of jail on $1,000 bail when he was accused of killing six people at a Christmas parade in Waukesha.
