Suspect In Milwaukee Burger King Shooting Turns Self In: Police

MILWAUKEE, WI — Derrick Ellis, the Burger King employee accused of shooting and killing 16-year-old Niesha Harris-Brazell in the crossfire of a robbery attempt, turned himself into police on Tuesday, according to the Milwaukee Police Department. He turned himself in at District 1, a Milwaukee Police Department spokesperson told Patch in an email. Ellis, 34, has been charged with possess firearm-convicted of out-of-state felony and homicide by negligent handling of dangerous weapon/explosive in Milwaukee County Court, online records show. The charges against Ellis came after a criminal complaint alleged the Burger King robbery in the 5100 block of West Capitol Drive was "staged." Ellis, who was an employee at the restaurant, wasn't identified as being a part of the plot. A criminal complaint said Ellis was working at the restaurant when he fired multiple gunshots toward the drive-thru window, where a masked and armed man was trying to rob the restaurant, WISN 12 reported. A criminal complaint filed against the person accused of carrying out the robbery, Antoine Edwards, 41, said Harris-Brazell was killed in the crossfire after Ellis shot, the WISN 12 report said. Antoine Edwards, 41, is charged with felony murder, contribution to a juvenile's delinquency that lead to death and felony possession of a firearm, court records showed. Milwaukee police also arrested a 16-year-old worker, who the complaint said is Edwards' daughter. She told police that the robbery was "staged" to steal money and said that she was in on it, the complaint said. Patch Editor Ethan Duran contributed to this report.
