Channahon fire chief visits Troy school for Project American Hero

John Petrakis, Fire Chief of the Channahon Fire Protection District, recently visited the students in Bridget McMahon's Troy Shorewood Elementary School classroom to thank them for the support and encouragement that his station has received from the class since last September. McMahon said she began Project American Hero this year to commemorate the anniversary of September 11. For the project, her students sent Veterans Day and Christmas cards to veterans and first responders. They plan on sending more for upcoming holidays this year. Among the recipients of the cards were 20 local fire and police departments and first responders as far away as New York City. Petrakis told the fourth graders gathered in the school's gymnasium for his visit that they are heroes, as well, when they use personal courage to stand their ground to help others, to be kind, to be humble and to remember to use their positive character traits. Troy Shorewood Elementary School is a Troy Community School District 30-C school.
