JOLIET, IL — An 87-year-old Joliet man who lives in the 500 block of Garnsey Avenue was freed from the Will County Jail on Thursday after posting 10 percent of his $50,000 bail. Joliet police said he grabbed a gun and tried to shoot one of his neighbors late Wednesday afternoon. Percy Martin was charged with aggravated discharge of a gun, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and having no firearm owners identification card. The shooting happened around 4:40 p.m. in the 500 block of Garnsey, police said. "It was determined that Martin had fired a gun at a neighbor," police spokesman Dwayne English announced. "Further investigation revealed that while Martin was standing on the rear porch of his residence, he discharged a single round from a handgun in the direction of the victim, who was in standing in their own backyard." After shooting his gun, Martin went into his house, police said. The neighbor, a 57-year-old man, was not struck by the bullet. "It was learned that Martin did not say anything prior to firing the weapon," English said. Officers spoke with Martin at his house, took him into custody without any issues, and recovered a .38-caliber handgun, police said.
