Fairmont School District 89 superintendent Dr. Diane Cepela has informed the Fairmont Board of Education of her intent to retire at the end of the 2021-2022 school year. The Fairmont Board of Education accepted her retirement request at the January 19, 2022, Board of Education meeting. Dr. Cepela's last day will be June 30, 2022, after over 40 years in education. Before joining Fairmont in 2017, Dr. Cepela was the superintendent at Newark Grade School District 66 in Newark, IL from 2010 – 2016. Leaving behind a rock-solid learning community, Dr. Cepela is most proud of the relationships built in her tenure. “The last four and a half years working with the learning community of Fairmont School District 89 have been the greatest honor of my life. This time that we had, I will hold forever,” she stated. “It is bittersweet that after over 40 years in education, I am ready to retire. What a lucky person I am to leave behind the best job I have ever had, working with the best staff, the best Board of Education, the best learning community, and of course the best students one could hope to reach every single day.” On behalf of Fairmont Board of Education, Board President Mr. Louis Spoonhour, thanked Dr. Cepela for her dedicated and extraordinary years of service in education, and especially for her outstanding leadership at Fairmont School. “She will truly be missed. We thoroughly enjoyed her years with us, and salute her for her accomplishments to the benefit of our students.” The Fairmont School District 89 Board of Education will direct the search for the next superintendent.
