MENTOR, OH — A 42-year-old driver died Thursday after a train smashed into a pickup truck he was driving in Mentor.
The train was headed east through Mentor around 9:50 a.m., stopping traffic on Hopkins Road, police said. The truck drove around the stopped cars, ignored flashing lights and then drove around the lowered gate, city officials said. The train then hit the truck, according to city officials.
The impact threw the driver from the truck, officials said. The driver, who was the only person in the truck, died at the scene.
No one on the train was hurt, city officials said in a statement.
The accident was under investigation. Further details weren't immediately available.
