Description
As you may know, the independent Portland Charter Commission has embarked on the once-in-a-decade opportunity to review and revise the City of Portland’s Charter (the City’s constitution) and recommend amendments for Portlanders to vote on. From the structure of City government to the roles and power of the Mayor and Council, amendments to the City Charter can have a great impact on how we as Portlanders address the most pressing issues facing our city.
The Charter Commissioners believe democracy works best when the most voices can weigh in on the biggest issues facing our government, and that’s why I am writing to you today to encourage you to take the Charter Commission Phase I Community Priority Survey.
This survey will help the Charter Commission understand how changes to the Charter could make the City more responsive and equitable, as well as how community members would like to be served by our city government and represented by our city’s elected leaders. The Commission is working closely with partner organizations to encourage participation across diverse communities, particularly those who have lacked access to City Hall decision-making. Your voices are valued, too.
I encourage each of you to take the survey and to invite your Portland friends and neighbors to participate as well. The survey closes next Monday, January 24th. It is available in English, Spanish, Russian, Chinese and Vietnamese.
