Bill is about as pissed off as the rest of decent people at the republicans. I certainly agree with him! “In 1965, 30 out of 31 Republicans in the US Senate voted to pass the Voting Rights Act which prohibited racial discrimination in voting. Today every Republican in the Senate is working to end those protections. Every damn one of them. Does voting for a party that is 100% racist make someone a racist? I think it all depends on what they do now that it’s clear Republicans are a racist party. If they are like, whoops, sorry, won’t do that again; then clearly not. If they are like, you know what, it just doesn’t bother me; then clearly yes. And Racism is Real. Lots and lots of responses to this last email in my inbox even before Fox and the rest got hold of it. And to be honest, some were a bit disappointing. I encouraged many to read or reread Dr. King’s Letter from the Birmingham jail and his response to those who would say this is not the right time, or that confronting racism isn’t the right way. But as I read more of the “where in this is the love I usually hear from Penzeys” emails, I came to see that missing in their words was any sense of those on the receiving end of racism. It’s like for many the question simply was, is this fair to Republicans? Sure they're responsible for the racism, but who is really getting hurt when minority votes don’t count as much as white votes. No harm, no foul. A victimless crime. No. Big time No! Racism really sucks, especially for those helpless to protect their children from its heartbreak while even so many supposedly liberal people just don’t seem to care. As a mom or as a dad, how do you explain to your child how, in America, life can be so unfair and there’s nothing you can do to protect them from that? How? Since Friday I’ve received so many great emails from those on the receiving end of Republican racism just so happy somebody, somewhere gets it. Some were long and personal and had me in tears. Others like this were short and sweet and the perfect vaccination against the thousands of angry ALL CAPS, Fox News-reader, cursing emails populating my inbox. “I was having the shittiest day and this email made me smile. Fabulous to know there are folks out there that actually give a shhhh about how we are treated.” L.S. And thanks to all who wrote one way or the other who took the time to put some thought into word choice. Seriously, of the thousands of negative emails I’ve received in the last five days this one will be remembered: “Thank you for your special on racist Republicans!!! “You’ve made it easy for me to blast out your message to my large circle of conservative family and friends to make sure they never buy anything from your company again, you arrogant (and wrong) peckerhead.” E.M. There, finally, after all these years I’ve now been called a peckerhead. I was never too keen on business cards even in the days when they were popular, because what do I call myself? Should they ever return I now know what my title will forever be. Thanks for making us possible. Thanks for thinking of those on the receiving end of racism, Bill” P.S. If this email was forwarded to you by a friend, would you please consider signing up for our email list A business is only as good as its customers. If you believe in vaccines, all the goodness set in motion each time we say Black Lives Matter, and knocking on every door possible before 11.8.22 to turn out every last vote to save our democracy, we would be better off with you on our mailing list.
