He will share some of his tips and techniques (cultivated through trial and error with success) for creating all new programs based on museum collections or resulting from discussions with visitors and ideas from Board members. Many of these are simple and inexpensive but provide excellent word-of-mouth from attendees and encourage return attendance. Learn how to slightly change and add new activities to current public programs to attract new and bring back previous visitors as well as create events entirely from scratch. He will also share some ways to engage children, making the museum a fun place they want to return to with their families. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions and share their experiences with creating new public programs at their sites. Ronald I. Marvin, Jr., OLHA Region 2 Representative; and, Director, Wyandot County Historical Society 2:00 Networking Break 2:15 Engaging Young People in Local History Getting young people interested in their history is an ongoing conundrum for historical societies. The Seneca County Museum will share information about their successful program to engage young people in the community via a unique collections item. They found that everyone remembered the four-legged baby duck, so they held a naming contest and created a cartoon character to go around the county and highlight county history. Learn what they did and how the community reacted, and be inspired to try something similar! Theresa Sullivan, Director, Seneca County Museum 3:00 Tour of Seneca County Museum 4:00 Adjourn Questions?
