Region 8 Draft Agenda: 9:00 Registration 9:30 Welcome 9:45 Small Museums as Agents of Change (Herget Building) It's been a tough couple of years for museums, especially smaller institutions, so we'll start the day with a reminder of why we do what we do, your impact on the community as an agent of change, and some of the challenges to running a museum including collecting, exhibits and interpretation. Dr. Brian Hackett will reintroduce us to how a museum functions, how collections are grown and managed, how museum exhibits reflect communities and preserve their stories for the future. Plus some of the crazy, quirky items museum curators come across in the course of their work. Dr. Brian Hackett, Assistant Director, Northern Kentucky University Public History Program 11:15 Break/ Move to the Mitchel Building. 11:30 Sharing Time - Share Your Mission Statement Pick one representative from your organization to share your organization's mission. Why do you do what you do for your community. Is your Mission Statement out-of-date? Don't have one? No worries. Connect with your colleagues during lunch to share ways to refresh it or craft one from scratch. Please keep comments to 2 minutes, so that each group has the chance to share and inspire others. Thanks! 12:15 Lunch (Mitchel Building & Grounds) View our nearest star though the 1845 Telescope (weather permitting). 1:00 Ohio Local History Alliance Region 8 Business Meeting 1:15 Ohio History Connection Local History Services Report 1:30 Break / Attendees stay in the Mitchel Building or move to the Herget Building. 1:45 Option 1 (Herget Building) Collections Assessment 101 A collection assessment is often the first step for small institutions striving to improve the condition of their collections. The resulting report, with its prioritized findings, offers concrete recommendations for improving collections care. This session will introduce the assessment process; why an assessment is important, how to select a consultant, what it entails, how best to implement its findings, and what are the next steps. Elizabeth Allaire is the owner and chief conservator at Allaire Fine Art Conservation, LLC, and is a Fellow of the American Institute for Conservation. Option 2 (Mitchel Building) Private/Public Partnerships We’ll build on the ideas of relevance and audience from the morning session to explore the methods and techniques used when connecting to your community. What story do you want to tell? What do you want your audience to experience? How can you tell a story that is relevant and compelling? Christina Hartlieb, Executive Director, Harriet Beecher Stowe House; Elizabeth Kruthoffer, Rare Books Librarian, The Lloyd Library; Donna Harris, Director, Over-the-Rhine Museum; Moderator: Terrie Puckett, OLHA Region 8 Representative; and, Executive Director, The Grail in the U.S. 3:00 Tour of the Cincinnati Observatory 4:00 Adjourn Questions?
