Description

Connect with Creation – Heal Our Communities: Justice Conference at Zephyr Point, NV Indigenous cultures tell us that we must consider the impacts of our decisions on the next seven generations. We confess that because of our lack of forethought our world carries great scars: colonialism, racism, Covid-19, wealth inequality, systemic poverty and hunger, floods and droughts, fires and mudslides. During this time together as people of faith, we will explore a global understanding of ecological devastation, as well as discover spiritually-grounded and tangible tools to equip us for engagement in our own local communities. It is our hope for each church to send their pastor and key leaders to begin these important conversations of faith and action.* Meanwhile, we are excited to announce that the Rev. Dr. Cláudio Carvalhaes will be our keynote speaker for this event. As a former shoe-shining boy from São Paulo, Brazil, Claudio is a much sought after worldwide speaker, writer, and preacher. He is a PC(USA) minister, activist, and the Associate Professor of Worship for Union Theological Seminary in New York City.McCormick Seminary president Frank Yamada said of Dr. Carvalhaes, “I can think of few leaders in theological education who inspire like Cláudio Carvalhaes. He has been on the cutting edge of cross-cultural worship within the PC(U.S.A.). He is a voice of liberation among communities of color, an advocate for young adults, and a prophetic presence among those who are pushing the church into the 21st century.” Claudio is the author of From the Ends of the World: Prayers in Defiance of Empire (Abingdon Press, August 2020); What Worship Has To Do With It? Interpreting Life Liturgically (Cascade 2018); Editor of Only One is Holy: Liturgy in Postcolonial Lenses (Palgrave, 2015) and Eucharist and Globalization. Redrawing the Borders of Eucharistic Hospitality, (Wipt&Stock, 2013). And his latest book is Praying With Every Heart – Orienting Our Lives to the Wholeness of the World (Oregon: Cascade Books, 2021). Personal Website: www.claudiocarvalhaes.com If your heart is with justice, come and be inspired to fan the flames of the work that you can envision in your churches, communities, and across the country. As Desmond Tutu once said, "If an elephant is standing on the tail of a mouse, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality." Now is not a time for neutrality or moderation, but leaning into what we know is right. Come and be inspired. Come and let's create change. Sponsoring this conference is the North Central California Presbytery Missions Support Committee, Pastoral Support Committee and the Committee on Representation. *Please note that if you are with the North Central California Presbytery, we have limited scholarships for one pastor and one lay person per church on a first come, first served basis. If you have the financial means, we encourage you to pay the full price so that this can give the opportunity for greater participation. Thank you for your understanding.
