WEST ISLIP, NY — A West Islip man faces charges after almost $250,000 worth of Samsung Galaxy phones were found in his car in October 2020, New York State Police said. On Oct. 27, 2020 at around 2:32 a.m., state police responding to an alarm at the Best Buy in Monroe observed a grey Subaru Crosstrek with no license plate traveling east on Larkin Drive. When troopers initiated a traffic stop, two passengers fled the car, and it drove away. Eventually the car's driver complied with the traffic stop, pulling over on SR 218. That driver was Edward Callegari, 47, of West Islip. Police found 228 Samsung Galaxy phones in his car, totaling over $249,000 in value. Callegari faces a slew of charges: Driving while ability impaired (DWAI) drugs, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, fourth-degree conspiracy, second-degree grand larceny, third-degree burglary, criminal mischief, first-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, obstruction of governmental administration, unlawful possession of radio devices, and possession of burglar tools. He was arraigned in the Town of Monroe Court and remanded to Orange County Jail — meaning he's being held in custody while he awaits trial. And on Tuesday, state police arrested Jarred Sweeney, 32, of Brooklyn after an investigation found he was one of the passengers in the vehicle that fled the scene on Oct. 27, 2020. Sweeney was charged with third-degree burglary, third-degree criminal mischief and second-degree grand larceny. He was arraigned in the Town of Monroe Court and released on an appearance ticket.
