SMOG TEST: Question and advise please

Hello! My car tags expired back in October of last year. I can't get it passed it's smog test no matter what I try. No mechanic can tell me what is wrong with it or even why. Without it passing that smog test, I can't buy my tags and last week, I almost got a ticket. Can someone "WHO HAS HAD THE SAME ISSUE" advise me on that YOU did and perhaps where you go it done? I sincerely appreciate the response with caring advise.
