An annual opportunity to gather the people of Greater Greenwood to hear from the Mayor about the growth and progress of the city, to join in prayer for the various facets of the community, and to hear a testimony of transformation from a speaker. This year the speaker is Phil Stone, a former sports broadcaster About the SpeakerFor 29 years, Phil Stone lived his dream calling play-by-play of NFL Football and Major League Baseball for NBC Sports and hosted golf and almost every Olympic sport for ESPN. He was the Voice of the Pac-10 for Prime Ticket Network. Today, he prefers sharing his testimony punctuated by captivating stories of his days in the broadcast booth. “Phil spoke in front of 900 at our Houston Prayer Breakfast and he was riveting. Some in attendance felt it was one of our very best in the 38 years we’ve been staging this event,” declared organizer Chris Perkins. In 1994, Phil began wondering if there was anything more to life than travelling the world doing sports. That same year, a number of his close friends introduced him to a church not far from his home in San Diego, and six months later he accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior. As Phil grew in his relationship with Christ, he wanted more men to experience the joy and excitement of knowing the Lord, so he organized and facilitated a men’s retreat for his church. What started with 23 men heading up a mountain to Forest Home, California, soon grew to 55 men and then 80 and finally 110. To say he has a passion for men and their relationship with Jesus Christ would be an understatement. “There is something uniquely beautiful about witnessing a man surrendering his heart to Christ" said Phil. On fire for Christ and looking to accelerate his walk, Phil met Dick Bridgman, who, for 27 years, headed up CBMC in San Diego. They became fast friends and together they launched a National Day of Prayer Breakfast which Phil emceed for years. Since those days, Phil has emceed or shared his testimony at numerous other CBMC outreaches and prayer breakfasts, as well as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes annual Holiday Bowl Prayer Breakfast, attended by over 1,500. “I’ve organized and attended prayer breakfasts since 1982, and I’ve heard a lot of wonderful speakers,” recalled Jim Salinger of Orange, California. “But rarely have I seen a keynote speaker capture an audience like Phil.”After 32 years in San Diego, Phil moved cross-country to join CBMC, as National Director of Broadcast Production and Marketing, in July 2008. To be called by God sometimes means trusting Him enough to leave family, friends and a lifestyle you’ve become accustomed to behind! “It was really about reprioritizing my life and placing God first, Phil reflected. Several years ago, Phil had the privilege of leading his 83-year-old mother to Christ and then an hour later raced to a Columbus area hospital to lead her twin sister to the Lord, one day before she met Him face-to- face. He calls that frigid December day the greatest day of his life. Growing up in Columbus, Ohio, Phil is a devoted Buckeye fan and has two grown children, Brent and Lindsay. _________________________________________________________________________________________ **This year's Prayer Breakfast will be compliant with local COVID-19 guidelines.
