On Saturday, January 29, 2022, HANDY will be hosting an outdoor concert of our youth performing their album recorded with Alexander Star. On Saturday, January 29, 2022 HANDY will host Library of Us Concert in partnership with Riverwalk Fort Lauderdale and presented by Moss Foundation! This exciting day of music, creativity, and fun will be held from 2pm to 4pm at Huizenga Plaza! Our youth will be performing all the songs from the album with artist, Alexander Star. HANDY youth partnered with Emmy-Nominated Impact Artist and Songwriter Alexander Star (Star) to release Library of Us, a collaborative musical album which features songs written and performed by Star and youth from HANDY. The album consists of six original songs written to express the journeys that youth in foster care (and other vulnerable situations) encounter during their lives. The album was created during the height of the pandemic, therefore none of the recordings were created in-person or even at the studio. Rather, Alexander Star coached HANDY students through the songwriting process via Zoom and taught them how to record clean vocals using only their cell phones. Star then gathered the students’ cell phone recordings, gave the vocals a professional audio mix, recorded his own parts, and solidified the final product all from the safety of his home. All proceeds from the “Library of Us” concert will directly benefit HANDY’s youth. HANDY’s mission is to achieve positive, lasting change for youth by providing life skills, education, and a supportive community. Studies show prepared students have higher confidence in the classroom, improved behavior and grades, reduced absenteeism, and better attitudes toward school and learning.
