Reflection Riding, in partnership with Tennessee Ornithological Society (TOS), will host an afternoon of learning about sandhill cranes!
We will start the day with Dr. David Aborn, an ornithology professor at UTC. He has been involved with sandhill crane research at the Hiwassee Refuge for many years. At noon, he will give a brief history and discussion about the sandhill crane population that is currently migrating through Tennessee. You’ll also get to see Reflection Ridig’s captive sandhill cranes up close. Then, our group will caravan to the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge, where a portion of the migratory flock overwinters. Members of TOS will provide their spotting scopes and be available to answer questions about sandhill cranes and the many other birds that are visible from the observation deck. This will be a fun day to learn and enjoy these magnificent birds!
Location: We will begin the program at Reflection Riding and then caravan to the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge.
Trip Leaders: Dr. David Aborn, Betsy Bowden
