SOMERVILLE, MA — Temporary changes are coming to Lyndell's Bakery, but the 135-year-old Somerville institution is here to stay. Last week, rumors began floating about the future of the bakery, apparently sparked by its landlord's plan to demolish the building on Broadway. A statement on Lyndell's Facebook page indicates the plan is to tear down the building and construct a mixed-use retail and residential development. "Lyndell's Bakery plans on relocating temporarily while the construction takes place and will continue to operate with no interruptions," the statement continued, adding that the bakery is "not closing and not for sale." Lyndell's was founded in 1887, just 45 years after the city of Somerville itself was officially incorporated. It is currently on its fourth owner, the Galatis family, which brought Jim Dufoe on as an operating partner in 2013. Bill Galatis told the Boston Globe the landlord wants to bring the bakery back once the development is finished and will work with the business to "build a brand new, and maybe even larger, Lyndell's."
