Former NJ Devils Champions Teach Hockey Lesson At Westfield Rink

WESTFIELD, NJ — New Jersey Devils Alumni and Stanley Cup Champions Bruce Driver and Grant Marshall, as well as the NJ Devil himself, hit the ice with 50 boys and girls in Westfield last Sunday. The New Jersey Devils Learn to Play Program, presented by RWJBarnabas Health, took place at the Westfield Rink at Gumbert Park on Sunday, Jan. 9. This is a multi-week introductory hockey program that offers an opportunity for local families to join the hockey community and for kids to learn fundamental skills to help them succeed both on and off the ice. Mustafa Naematullah, of RWJBarnabas Health's Matthew J Morahan III Center for Athletes, kicked off the program with a dynamic stretching routine to ensure all the kids were properly warmed up. This was followed by an on-ice hockey lesson led by NJ hockey legends Driver and Marshall. Beyond skating and puck-handling skills, the program also focuses on the "development of character and life skills such as responsibility, respect, integrity, perseverance and teamwork" according to Learn to Play's website. "It's about falling down and getting up, making new friends from teammates and most of all creating fun memories that'll last a lifetime."
