EAST PROVIDENCE, RI — City officials extended closures for the East Providence senior and recreation centers, as well Municipal and Probate court hearings, amid the coronavirus pandemic. Municipal government meetings also shifted to online. The centers were originally closed on Dec. 31, 2021 because of the transmissibility of the omicron variant. The city also saw an increased number of center employees contracting the coronavirus. City officials said the closures and cancellations will be extended until Jan. 28, and will be re-evaluated then. During the closure, the senior center transitioned to grab and go lunches. Home delivery of lunches will be made available for those seniors who are unable to drive to the center. The Senior Center does not deliver lunches to residents staying outside of East Providence. Seniors, who would like to order a lunch for pickup or delivery, are asked to call 401-270-1814. The senior center will also continue helping residents schedule COVID-19 testing, vaccine appointments and find food and other resources. Those that need help may call the senior center at 401-435-7800 or the COVID-19 Hotline at 401-533-9812. They can also visit the city website.
