MERRIMACK, NH — Police, and fire from Merrimack and Amherst responded to Baboosic Lake for a report of an overturned ATV through the ice on Monday. Merrimack firefighters arrived at Shore Drive where a person advised of an ATV that had gone into the water. Firefighters asked for resources to be sent from New Hampshire Fish and Game, and Marin Patrol while they prepared to access the ice to begin searching. Crews put on ice rescue suits and prepared an inflatable boat that could be brought onto the ice that was thin and had several areas of open water. Amherst Fire sent additional personnel to the Merrimack side of the lake. Nashua Fire Rescue was requested to respond to Merrimack for station coverage due to the large number of resources assigned to the Baboosic Lake incident. As crews began to work on the ice rescue, a call came in from the Amherst side of the lake indicating a person thought the ATV belonged to his neighbor. The caller indicated he had seen his neighbor walk home from the ice and go into his residence. Merrimack and Amherst police responded to the address of the owner of the ATV. It was confirmed that the vehicle had gone through the ice and he did not require medical attention. Rescue crews were updated that no one was in the water and crews safely exited the ice. Fish and Game was notified that they would need to work on the removal of the ATV and that Merrimack Fire did not have sufficient equipment to recover it. Authorities suggest that if a person has an incident such as this they notify local authorities to prevent deploying resources to attempt an unneeded rescue. Merrimack police and Fish and Game will handle the investigation of the incident. ©Jeffrey Hastings www.frameofmindphoto.com/news
