PORTLAND, OR — It may not seem like it makes sense but Portland officials are sure that doubling the price of parking by Providence Park will create higher turnover and more parking. The city council will consider a proposal on Wednesday that would more than double the price of parking in the area.
The price would go to $4 each hour from the current $1.60 per hour.
The new price would be in effect only on days when the Portland Thorns or Portland Timbers are playing.
Officials say that by increasing the price of on-street parking in the Northwest District, fewer people going to the games would park on the street, creating more parking for people just headed to the area.
The city's budget office believes that by more than doubling the price of parking, the city will collect a little less than double what they collect now.
Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty, who oversees the Portland Bureau o Transportation, had the proposal added to the agenda for this week's meeting.
