WEST ISLIP, NY — A West Islip High School senior whose bowling average is currently Long Island's best has set a state record, Newsday reported. Senior Tim Smith threw three 300 games this season (a perfect score), the news outlet reported. Before him, no bowler in state history had bowled more than two 300 games in one season, Newsday said. "Knowing the amount of practice I put in makes the 300's feel even better than they already are," Smith told Newsday. "They're still very nerve-wracking and they always will be. I am filled with joy and happiness, especially with how crazy and hectic this year has been, as I try to figure out my future." In November 2020, Smith was awarded a $1,000 scholarship after he won the Long Island Generations Bowling Tour's 49 and under handicap contest, according to Bowlage, a website that reports on the Northeast's bowling community. As a freshman, he helped West Islip win the Suffolk County varsity bowling doubles championship, where he and then-junior Ryan Murphy competed against 90 other teams from 30 schools countywide. At that tournament, Smith bowled games of 254, 210 and 255, according to West Islip Public Schools. Read more from Newsday.
