On Thursday night, at Carnegie Hall, Igor Levit resisted an encore for three curtain calls -- but then unkennelled Wagner's motif of heartbreak, a suitable refrain for my present shipwreck, surrounded by elegant and gelid women. The Hall, in a paroxysm of cruelty, has shuttered all places of refreshment for the masses while allowing the Patron's Lounge to remain open (entry fee: $5,000).
