“ This Dr. King Holiday weekend, when every single Republican in the US Senate is working to take away the minority voting rights Dr. King gave his life to achieve, could you honor his ultimate sacrifice by taking a little time to read his words? So many mistake his non-violence for also being non- confrontational and that was not him. A segregated restaurant, or bus, or school, or bridge wasn’t racist until a Black person walks in and takes a seat. And then, oh my, the racism comes cascading down. Don’t believe Republicans are racist? Call one a racist and watch what happens next. Call someone who is not a racist, or just a bit racist, a racist and you will get: Yeah, well. That’s just, like, your opinion, man. Or: I really don’t think so, but I will give it some thought, we can all do better. Call Republicans racists and suddenly your inbox will fill with Republicans doing their best impressions of the police captain from Casablanca, Shocked, just Shocked! to learn that there is gambling at Rick’s Place while being handed his winnings. Point out the “textbook” racism of Republicans and expect to get a lot of ALL CAPS replies. Lots of shouts of Shame! and Hate Crime, and Absolutely Outrageous, and Disgusting, and lots and lots of f-bombs. Point out Republicans are racists and you will hear a whole bunch about George Floyd’s criminal record, and Islamic terrorists, and a whole lot of easily disproven lies about Black Lives Matter and how pretty much every city was burned down by violent looters. What you won’t get is much in the way of honesty. And seriously, every single Republican in the US Senate is working to take away the minority voting Dr. King worked his whole life to make possible. Voting for people who do racist things is an act of racism. If you are able to step out of your comfort zones and challenge those whose votes give Republicans the power to inflict racism on those already facing more obstacles, that would be awesome. If you don’t have that kind of strength at the moment you can still do good simply by not undermining those who are trying. Please don’t let your desire for what Dr. King calls “the absence of tension” stand in the way of “peace which is the presence of justice.” Please read Dr. King’s Birmingham Letter. He’s going to yell at you about your “confrontation is the wrong way, now is not the right time” approach, but he’s going to do it in an amazing way that uplifts you and leaves you with real strength. The same racism that’s taken hold of the Republican Party murdered Dr. King to silence him. If you don’t read his words, they win. And with our challenging the inherent racism in supporting what today’s Republican Party has become, we’ve so far had a little over 10,000 unsubscribes from our email list.
