Press release from the City of Irving: January 14, 2022 DFW International Airport is advising Irving and other communities that the anticipated weather system moving into the region tonight may require aircraft to use runways that could increase airport noise over some residences. Weather forecasts anticipate winds from the northwest at around 25 to 35 mph with gusts as high over 50 mph tonight, then continuing through Saturday evening, Jan. 15. DFW's primary runways are oriented north/south; however, many aircraft cannot use the north/south runways with strong northwest crosswinds, such as those forecasted for tonight and tomorrow.   When winds are westerly or northwesterly (West Flow), the diagonal Runways 13R/31L and 13L/31R may be needed for both arrivals and/or departures. The diagonals may also need to remain open late or overnight to accommodate overnight operations during these strong winds. DFW says the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will not go into West Flow unless needed for safety due to strong crosswinds. The shift in aircraft operations during these weather conditions may affect Irving, as well as Southlake, Grapevine, Trophy Club and Coppell. These cities could experience additional aircraft traffic.
