Stationary Diesel Engine Operator/Mechanic South Florida Water Management District Homestead Field Station – Homestead, FL Full Time Job Description: Operate, maintain and overhaul stationary diesel engines, large pumps and ancillary machinery and equipment at a pumping station. Perform preventative maintenance of diesel engines, main pumps, generators, compressors, raw water intakes, and trash rakes. Detect, diagnose, repair and report machinery and equipment malfunctions. Utilize basic mathematical skills and reads drawings to understand piping system and machinery layout. Maintain a history of machinery equipment and water conditions. Other duties as assigned. Work Hours: The Homestead Field Station work hours are Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Our offices are closed on Friday. Employment Guidelines: High School Diploma or GED and 2+ years' experience in the operation and maintenance of diesel engines. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Licenses: Valid State of Florida Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required without restriction to operate vehicle equipped with a manual transmission and air brakes, or the ability to obtain within 3 months from date of hire and/or placement in job. If selected candidate does not already have a Class B CDL, candidate will be required to obtain CDL Permit prior to hire date. District will pay cost for attending CDL School towards obtaining full license. The ability to obtain and maintain Forklift Operations Certification and First Aid/CPR/AED certification. Physical Requirements/Working Environment: Due to the District's response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies, depending on assigned emergency response role. Work activities typically involve the following: Regularly sets up, adjusts, controls, tests, and operates equipment to complete assignments. Work environment may be hot and humid with no facilities. Moves or otherwise transports equipment weighing up to 50 pounds or more. Basic water skills and ability to swim. Drive/operate equipment. Exposure to gases and/or fumes (paint, welding, oil, grease, adhesive, chemical, herbicide, motor solvent, monoxide, dust). Repetitive bending. Segmental vibration. Walking, rough terrain. Confined areas. Noise exposure.
