South Suburban Humane Society Lowers Fees To Honor Betty White

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL — On what would be Betty White's 100th birthday, Jan. 17, animal welfare organizations around the country are rallying behind White's lifelong crusade to help the furry friends. The South Suburban Humane Society in Chicago Heights will also be participating in the now viral #BettyWhiteChallenge by lowering adoption fees and raising money for the shelter's two suburban locations. Adoption fees at both the Humane Society's Chicago Heights and Homewood adoption centers will be $100 off for all pets above 6 months old. In a recent interview with Patch, shelter CEO Emily Klehm said older dogs were among the hardest to be adopted since many families would rather opt for a puppy. Adoption fees for older dogs and cats, however, are usually around $100 to begin with, so the Jan. 15-16 deal will lower the barrier for many to adopt. The shelter is also raising money for those who wish to donate in White's honor. "Betty White was a decades long advocate for pet adoption and for the love that pets bring to our lives," the society said in a social media post. "For her 100th Birthday, the challenge has been issued to donate to your local shelter in her memory."
