Location: South Golf Course Starting Pay Rate: $17.10 Job Summary: Performs work of considerable difficulty assisting in the maintenance, operation, and management activities of an assigned Executive, Regulation, or Multi-Course. Assists in planning, budgeting, scheduling, and overseeing maintenance activities of the course assigned. Answers questions and complaints from golfers and informs Superintendent of problems and potential problems. Duties and Responsibilities: Participates in the setting of work priorities and determination of work projects to be conducted on a day-to-day basis. Assists in the determination of equipment, materials, and personnel needed for specific projects. Assigns tasks to employees and gives instruction in proper work methods. Reviews work while in progress and upon completion to ensure compliance with instructions. Coordinates the work of temporary employees. Assists in the work of crews primarily through performance of the more difficult tasks or in the demonstration of proper work technique. Conducts periodic inspections of golf course grounds and facilities to locate malfunctioning equipment and areas in need of attention. Participates in the repair of irrigation systems. Mixes and applies the application of herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides. Assures adequate safety precautions are observed. Assists in the determination of manpower and budgetary needs and makes related recommendations. May act as Golf Course Superintendent during his/her absence. Works with golf course employees in the maintenance of course adherence to established standards. Participates in supervising the cleaning, maintenance, and repair of golf course equipment, building, and tools. May assist employee in performing more complex duties involved in turf maintenance. Participates in maintenance and grounds keeping duties as required. Trains employees in the correct, safe, and proper operation of golf course maintenance equipment. Performs follow-up and continuous training Qualifications: Progressively responsible experience in golf course maintenance or related field preferred. Supervisory experience preferred. Possession of or the ability to obtain a State of Arizona Restricted Use Pesticide Certificate within six months of employment date. Possess and maintain a valid State of Arizona Driver’s License. Prefer two years of college level education in Turf Grass Management or related field. Knowledge, Skills, and Activities: Good knowledge of the methods, standards, safety practices, chemicals, tools, and equipment used in the care and maintenance of golf courses. Good knowledge of turf species used in golf courses and the fertilizers and chemicals used to promote growth and control pests and diseases. Good knowledge of the layout of the course and potential problem areas. Knowledge of golf rules, etiquette, and methods of play. Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in maintenance and grounds keeping activities. Knowledge of golf course design and maintenance standards. Ability to schedule and supervise employees. Ability to analyze the condition of soils, plants, trees, and grasses. Ability to perform physical labor in a variety of weather and working conditions. Ability to establish effective working relationships with co-workers, golfers, and the general public. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form. Ability to continue education as turf grass management techniques are refined and improved.
