MILWAUKEE, WI — An off-duty Milwaukee police detective was shot while trying to stop a robbery in Milwaukee's Third Ward neighborhood on Thursday, Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman announced. The detective is in stable condition after being shot multiple times by an unknown person around 2 p.m. in the 200 block of E. Buffalo Street, Norman said. The person tried to steal a car at E. Buffalo Street and N. Water Street and then tried to rob the driver inside of a nearby business, Norman said. The off-duty detective tried to intervene in the robbery before the person took out a gun and shot them multiple times before fleeing. The detective shot back but hit no one, police said. Norman said he wished the detective a speedy recovery. An 18-year-old and a 17-year-old were arrested in connection to the shooting on the 3000 block of N. 30th Street, Norman said. Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson said that the city would work with its state partners to prevent violent crimes. "Since 2022 began, we had a 9-year-old shot, a 16-year-old shot and killed at work and now a police officer. Folks have had enough of deadly gun violence," Johnson said. Police have N. Water Street from E. St. Paul Avenue and E. Erie Street blocked off for an investigation. Officers were seen walking in and out of nearby businesses.
