Norwood Hotel Experiences Water Main Break Wednesday

NORWOOD, MA - The Norwood Fire Department responded to a report of a water main break Wednesday at the Residence Inn by Marriott at 375 Norwood Park South, according to Fire Chief David Hayes. "A water main broke on the second floor, causing the water to run about two inches deep," he explained. "It ran down to the first floor and into the elevator shaft. Because the electrical wiring had been damaged by the water, the hotel has had to close indefinitely." Because of the water damage, guests were not able to get to the upper floors by elevator, causing an access issue for people with disabilities. He added that this caused the evacuation of the guests there, many of whom are local workers in Norwood. They were moved to neighboring hotels. "Many of the people on the Moderna construction project stay there from Monday to Friday," Hayes said. "There are also a lot of traveling workers and medical personnel who stay there." He added that larger buildings are usually broken into zones. If a zone is affected by damage, that part can be closed without affecting the entire building. However, the Marriott was not broken into zones. It is unclear how many people had to be evacuated at this time. A representative from the Marriott could not be reached at press time.
