EAST GARDEN CITY, NY — Two Queens men were arrested on Jan. 6 after Nassau County police say they tried to flee a traffic stop and crashed their car.
According to police, around 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 6, police saw a black 2017 Mercedes make a turn from Zeckendorf Boulevard onto Ring Road without signaling. Officers tried to pull the vehicle over, but police say the driver refused to stop. Soon after, the Mercedes crashed into a 2010 Lexus that was stopped at the intersection of Old Country Road and Ring Road, police said.
The passenger — Kevin Dobson, 24, of 253rd Street — fled the scene on foot, and officers gave chase, police said. During the chase, police say Dobson dropped a black handgun onto the ground. He was arrested soon after.
Police say the driver — Johnny Ortiz, 23, of 147th Avenue — was arrested without incident. Police say an investigation found another black handgun under the driver's seat.
The two people who were in the Lexus both suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment.
Ortiz was charged with second- and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and criminal possession of a firearm. Dobson was charged with two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, two counts of criminal possession of a firearm, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and multiple vehicle and traffic violations.
Both men were arraigned on Jan. 7 in First District Court in Hempstead. Both were released on their own recognizance.
