FREEPORT, NY — Giving back to those who served in the military, Long Island Cares holds a weekly event for veterans.
Military Appreciation Tuesdays take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m in Freeport.
"In addition to the great products veterans receive, it's a privilege to park our Veterans Project Mobile Outreach Unit right outside the Freeport location so that the veterans who come to Long Island Cares can receive additional fresh produce, lean proteins and personal protective equipment," Chief Government Affairs Officer Michael Haynes said.
Several dozen veterans show up each week for the food event at the Nassau Center for Collaborative Assistance.
Every other week the group VetsWork is there to assist veterans back into the workforce. Resume writing and interview tips are discussed.
"It's a friendly atmosphere, and they're a warm, welcoming group of veterans. They are concerned about each other and are always looking for new veterans to welcome to the group," Fern Summer, a veteran life skills specialist, who is hands-on at the Freeport location.
