Celebrate Black History Month by joining us for a free screening of "Just Mercy" at the Historic Howell Theater on February 11, 2022 at 7pm.
Based on the bestselling memoir by Equal Justice Initiative Director Bryan Stevenson, Just Mercy presents the unforgettable story of Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan) and the case of Walter McMillian (Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx), who was convicted and sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit.
“[M]ost people in this country don’t want there to be inequality and injustice,” Stevenson said in an interview with WBUR’s Tonya Mosley for NPR’s Here & Now. “They don’t want people to be treated unfairly or cruelly. I just think if you get closer to it, you’ll be motivated to say more, to do more.” His hope, Stevenson said, is that people who see the movie “will walk away with a greater consciousness about why we need to do better in this country when it comes to creating a justice system that is fair and reliable.”
Following the film, we encourage attendees to stay in downtown Howell to gather for continued discussions at one of the many local establishments.
