BEVERLY, MA — Beverly fire crews spent Thursday morning battling a blaze at a home on Gardner Street.
The Beverly Fire Department said at about 9 a.m. that "all companies currently working a 2nd alarm fire on Gardner street in the Montserrat section of the city."
There were reports of flames shooting from the roof and heavy smoke in the building mid-morning. WHDH-TV reported that neighbors helped alert the elderly homeowner of the fire and he was able to make it out of the house safely.
The station said he was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
Danvers, Peabody and Hamilton crews assisted in working to knock down the fire.
