TROY, MI — Troy residents were scammed out of nearly $44,000 trading bitcoin, Troy Police said. The residents were contacted by two people on WhatsApp and Telegram who claimed to be able to make large profits trading bitcoin, police said. Over the course of six-weeks, the residents deposited several transactions totaling $43,944 to these bitcoin websites, as the residents believed they were earning profits on these investments, police said. However, when they tried to access their funds, they were advised the accounts were "frozen" until they paid a 13 percent service fee, police said. The residents then realized they were being scammed, and also filed a complaint with the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center, police said.
