TUSCALOOSA, AL —A Northport woman has been indicted by a grand jury for capital murder in connection to the death of her 6-month-old grandchild, who had been in her care. Charlotte Tarasine Simpson, 47, was first arrested on October 18, 2021 after investigators were called out Oct. 15 to DCH in regards to an infant who had arrived at the hospital by ambulance. Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the multi-agency unit, said at the time that the infant had been found by its grandmother, who was keeping the child. Simpson was initially charged with manslaughter and after details were presented to a grand jury, a true bill for Capital Murder — Murder when the victim is less than fourteen years of age — was returned. She was arrested Wednesday night and booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail without bond. "She reported that she found the child in its bed not breathing and had called 911," Kennedy said in October. "It was determined that grandmother was alone with the child at the time of the injury that caused the infant's death," As Patch previously reported, the medical examiner's office informed investigators that the infant's cause of death was indicative of abuse.
