Description

Cripple Creek's Ski Touring 101, based at our Denver shop, is designed to set you (and your gear) up for sucess for your first day on snow. **UPDATE** January & February's 101 Events will be an Avalanche 101 and focus on the state of the snowpack and an introduction to backcountry touring. Colorado Adventure Guide's Avy 101 Clinic is a free avalanche awareness program. Not much science, no warnings to stay out of the mountains, no formulas to memorize. In one hour, you will see the destructive power of avalanches, understand when and why they happen, and how you can have fun in the mountains and avoid avalanches. Participants will learn how to manage risk in avalanche terrain with proper tour planning. Topics discussed are avalanches and their formation; interpreting avalanche bulletins; methods for managing risk; and tour and rescue techniques. Participants will have a chance to ask questions and review the topics discussed. We will take this program a step farther with our State of the Snowpack, where we track the weather since the beginning of winter and explore its effect on the snowpack for the purposes of traveling and recreating in the backcountry. While this is also not a science-based course, we will discuss the reasons that we track storms and analyze the snowpack regularly. Attendees will learn about the state of the current snowpack, how it got to where it is, and what this means as we welcome more snow to the area. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Pre-registration is required, as space is limited. As a COVID precauction, we will be checking vaccine cards at the door and require masks during the event. Dates: January 12, and Feburary 16; 6:00-8:00pm.
