Art School: Methods for Abstraction Workshop

Join teaching artist Celine Gordon for this workshop at Harwood Art Center on Saturday 4/9/2022 From the tight, geometric grids of Channa Horwitz to the loose flowing gestures of Kandinsky, there are a large variety of points of view and ways of working behind abstract art. In this class, students will explore different ways of approaching abstraction by looking at case studies from art history as well as contemporary artists. We will examine the elements that enrich abstract works including, scale, texture, color, composition, and process in order to create a series of 2D abstract compositions. This class will be open-ended and workshop style in order to help both new and practicing artists survey a variety of ways of working and creating. WhereHarwood's Art School classes will be held indoors at our campus near downtown Albuquerque. This class will be held in our "Dining Hall" space which will allow for social distancing between students. WhenThis class will be held Saturday, April 9th from 12pm to 3pm. WhoThis class is appropriate for ages 16 and up (under 18 requires parent or guardian permission). The class will be limited to 15 students. All participants must provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in advance of the class. What to BringA face mask* - all staff and attendees are required to wear a mask while on campus (indoors and outdoors)Watercolor or multimedia paperDrawing pens or pencils–micron pens, Sanford EBONY pencils, or an .07 mm mechanical pencil are recommendedChoose a medium to add a minimum of 3 colors: watercolor, gouache, colored pencils, ink, acrylic paints, and artist markers will all work. Please select the best medium for your art practice.* Recent research indicates that, unlike with previous variations of Covid, cloth masks alone are not sufficient for mitigating the spread of Omicron. As such, Escuela del Sol and Harwood Art Center are asking staff to wear either a respirator mask (such as an N-95, KN-95 or equivalent) or a surgical mask paired with a cloth mask. We are recommending the same for you all to help stop the spread of this new variant. Celine Gordon is an artist, illustrator, and graphic designer based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She graduated from Barnard College in New York City with a B.A. in Art History and Architecture. She has taught art and design for the past several years, working with students from Albuquerque Public Schools, Indigo Moose, and Albuquerque Academy’s six-week summer session. Celine currently serves as Education Director for the American Institute of Graphic Artists (AIGA). In 2020 she took part in Harwood Art Center’s SURFACE Emerging Artist exhibition. Celine takes a multi-media approach to art practice, but works primarily in drawing and printmaking. Class Fees will not be refunded if the student withdraws from the workshop less than one week before the start date of the class or after the class has begun. If the class is cancelled by Harwood Art Center for any reason, the Class Fee will be refunded in full.
