Gunman Carjacks Couple In Parking Lot Of Hawthorn Mall In Vernon Hills

By Sam Borcia, the Lake & McHenry County Scanner: Police say a man pulled a gun on a couple and stole their vehicle in the parking lot of Hawthorn Mall in Vernon Hills over the weekend. The Vernon Hills Police Department was called around 8:05 p.m. Saturday to the area of Tricoci Salon and Spa, 305 Hawthorn Center in Vernon Hills. Vernon Hills Deputy Police Chief James Levicki told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that the incident occurred in the Hawthorn Mall parking lot. A male suspect got out of a white vehicle and approached a couple while they were getting into their car. The suspect, who was armed with a gun, displayed a firearm and demanded the keys to the car, Levicki said. The victims complied and the suspect got into the Chevrolet Equinox and fled the scene. Levicki said the suspect drove towards Townline Road from the mail and drove in an unknown direction. The couple only described the suspect as either a male black or a male Hispanic, approximately 6-foot-3 and thin build. The incident remains under investigation by the Vernon Hills Police Department.
