Legion FC Announces Its 2022 Schedule

BIRMINGHAM, AL —After announcing a switch to Protective Stadium last month, Legion FC got a clearer picture of the upcoming soccer season when the USL Championship unveiled its 2022 schedule on Wednesday. The league, which now features 27 teams, will have a 34-game slate, with contests split evenly between home and road games. Legion FC is scheduled to play four of its first five games at Protective Stadium, including its home opener, scheduled for 4 p.m. on March 13 against the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Of Legion FC's 17 home games, seven will be played on Wednesdays, six on Saturdays and four on Sundays. The regular season will conclude on Saturday, Oct. 15, and the top seven teams in each conference will qualify for the 2022 USL Championship Playoffs. The USL Championship Final will be played between Nov. 10-14, 2022. Every match of the season will be available live on ESPN+, except for those that air on ESPN or ESPN2, the league said. Courtesy of Legion FC In November, Legion FC terminated its lease agreement for PNC Field (formerly BBVA Field) at UAB after playing there for three years. On Dec. 7, the club announced that it was moving to Protective Stadium, the newly-built home of UAB football in downtown Birmingham. The 47,000-seat stadium will be reduced to a smaller capacity for soccer. Jay Heaps, Legion FC president and general manager, called the move a "huge statement" for the club and one that would enhance the game-day experience for the fans, according to the Homewood Star. "It's really going to professionalize every aspect of what we're doing," Heaps said. "We are confident we can make Protective Stadium an exciting place to watch a professional soccer game. "We will start by outfitting Protective Stadium to feel like more of a soccer venue by scaling down capacity to around 15,000 by adding tarps and branding. We've also made all tickets, season tickets as well as single-game tickets, substantially more affordable in order to boost attendance as well as continuing to increase our marketing efforts."
