The Thompson Drama Project (TDP) is seeking a musical, enthusiastic, experienced, and child-loving assistant director for its after-school theater program for students in grades 3-5 at Thompson Elementary School in Arlington. The show this year will be a musical revue with a large cast. The assistant director will have the primary responsibility for assisting with and/or creating choreography for the musical and will help run rehearsals on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons. Since 2007, the Thompson Drama Project has run a highly successful program, backed by parent volunteers who are familiar with production tasks. Parent volunteers are available to help with rehearsals and production planning (costumes, sets, ticket sales, program, etc.), and children are also involved in the off-stage aspects of theatre production. The play will rehearse in the school music room and multi-purpose room. The production will take place on the stage in the school gym. Sound equipment/a sound board is available. Auditions will be held in January, rehearsals will begin in January on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00-3:30 and Friday afternoons from 2:30-5:00. Thursday afternoon (2:30-5:00) rehearsals will be added in mid-February, and the production is scheduled for April 7-10. The assistant director must pass a CORI check, and must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Compensation is $1,000-$1,500, depending on experience. Responsibilities Assist director at two-three weekly rehearsals from January through March on Tuesday afternoons, 1:00-3:30, and Thursday and Friday afternoons, 2:30-5:00 Take primary responsibility for teaching choreography to ensemble groups and soloists at rehearsalsAssist with weekend Technical Rehearsals on March 26/27 and after-school Dress Rehearsals on April 1 and 5.Assist with directing 3-4 performances from April 7-10, times TBD. Qualifications Experience directing/assistant directing or teaching dance in at least a few shows, whether in college, regional, professional, children’s, or community theaters, and working with parent or community volunteers Experience working with groups of children and musicPassionate about the community building power and fun of introducing musical theatre to elementary students
