CT Mother, Daughter Plead Guilty In U.S. Capitol Riot: Report

CONNECTICUT — Jean Lavin and Carla Krzywicki, the Canterbury mother and daughter accused of involvement in the U.S. Capitol insurrection, each pleaded guilty in federal court Tuesday to a single count of parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a capitol building, reported WTNH-TV. As a result of their pleas, the two face up to six months in prison when sentenced on April 22. Additionally, their plea deals also call for them to each pay $500 fines as restitution for damage to the U.S. Capitol, reported NBC Conecticut. More than $1.4 million worth of damage was done to the Capitol during the riot, according to estimates. Krzywicki, 20, and Lavin, 57, were accused of being part of the mob of supporters of former President Donald Trump who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, in an effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election. A half-dozen people died during or after the riot, and dozens of Capitol police officers were injured in the attack. Lawmakers, including Vice President Mike Pence, were forced to temporarily evacuate the Capitol, but returned hours later to certify the results of the election. Authorities found Krzywicki and Lavin after receiving tips that they had posted photos and comments about the riot on social media. More than 700 people have been arrested in connection with the Jan. 6 insurrection, with more than 150 reportedly pleading guilty. When arrested by federal authorities in September, the two also were charged with: Entering or remaining in a restricted building or groundsDisorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or groundsDisorderly conduct in a capitol buildingIn addition to Krzywicki and Lavin, five more Connecticut residents have been charged in connection with the insurrection, and they are all due back in court later this month or in February.
