First, today's weather: High: 29 Low: 25 Here are the top 3 stories in Burlington today: Recent University of Vermont research finds that the UVM Gund Institute for Environment Property damages from flooding in Vermont are expected to exceed $5.2 billion during the next 100 years. The majority of flood damages are projected along the Winooski River floodplains, which includes populous towns like Burlington, Essex, Colchester, Williston, and Montpelier. The study calculates flood damages at $2.13 billion currently, but when climate change projections are accounted for, that price tag jumps significantly to $5.29 billion. (Vermont Biz)Monday afternoon, the Child Development Division said 471 child care programs have signed up for the "Tests for Tots" initiative. Test kits for more than 9,000 children and nearly 3,000 staff members will go out this week. This initiative is an effort to keep young children residing in Vermont in child care as COVID-19 cases increase. This movement is designed to help the thousands of Vermont families who have kids in child care and who have been affected by new waves of COVID-19 cases that often kept their unvaccinated children home. (WCAX) On Tuesday, students across the area had their first seasonal school closure due to severe wind chills, as opposed to snow. Wind chills were as low as -31 degrees at Camels Hump State Park, and the Burlington International Airport came in at -24 degrees overnight. Many areas were showing dangerously low air temps during the time most children would be outside either waiting for school buses, walking, or biking to school.
