LONG VALLEY, NJ — A West Morris Central High School sophomore was recently chosen for the Ambassador Leadership Program of the National Honor Society of High School Scholars. According to a news release from the Atlanta, Georgia-based organization, Busch, 16, was chosen from among "hundreds of applicants for demonstrating strong academic achievement and a commitment to community service." One of the co-founders of the organization is the great-nephew of Alfred Nobel, the NSHSS website indicates, with the Nobel Prize's mission an inspiration for the group. Since 2002 when it was established, there have been over 1.7 million students involved with the NSHSS in more than 170 countries. "Each year, student members of NSHSS are invited to apply for leadership roles responsible for representing the Society in their schools and inspiring peers to become more involved in community activity," wrote the organization's spokesperson Karen Kane in the news release. "Participation in the NSHSS Ambassador Leadership Program is an opportunity for talented scholars to enhance their leadership skills by identifying a community or social need, actively becoming involved in volunteerism and helping others." Kane added that the organization may provide Ambassador scholarships to students who are actively involved in the program during their senior year of high school, with the Ambassador Leadership Program one that "pairs leadership education and skill development with community service." "I'm very happy that I was able to become an Ambassador and can't wait for new projects that I get to participate in," Busch told Patch. In her spare time, Busch says she enjoys being with her friends, baking, traveling, playing tennis and reading. "We are so proud of how she desires to take on responsibility and leadership in her school," parents Jerry and Carmen Busch wrote to Patch about their daughter.
