Description

Press release from the City of Austin: January 10, 2022 The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is undergoing a major reconstruction project of I-35 through an approximately 8-mile stretch of Central Austin. After presenting designs for the Capital Express Central project at a virtual public meeting over the summer of 2021, TxDOT is now preparing to present its preferred alternative in the fall of 2022. However, before that step in the federal environmental review process, TxDOT will present some modifications to its designs which incorporate comments from the community. According to TxDOT, the modifications support multimodal enhancements to the corridor, prioritize the use of existing right of way and improve bicycle and pedestrian access between the east and west sides of I-35. For more information, see a Jan. 7 memo to Mayor Steve Adler and Austin City Council Members here. The TxDOT project team will present the changes in a CapEX VOICE, or Volunteer Opportunity in Community Engagement, working group meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 25. CapEx VOICE meeting Date: Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2022 Time: 6-8 p.m. Location: Austin Central Library, 710 W. Cesar Chavez St., Austin Live stream: Register here Masks will be required at the Austin Central Library and social distancing practices will be observed. Details are subject to change based on health and safety protocols. As the Austin skyline continues to evolve with construction cranes dotting the downtown area, two projects will have associated travel lane closures beginning in January. A 60-story multi-use office and residential tower at 311 and 321 West Sixth St. is being constructed that will replace the existing BBVA bank building. Two lanes of West Sixth Street between Colorado and Guadalupe streets will be closed until 2025 during construction, although all access routes will be maintained. The closure will allow for a covered walkway for pedestrians to continue through the area safely rather than walking into active travel lanes or attempting mid-block crossings.
