CONCORD, NH — Those annoying international scammers who continue to call Americans from overseas will hopefully come to an end after 51 attorneys general, including John Formella of New Hampshire, called on the Federal Communications Commission to act. The officials are requesting FCC force "gateway providers," the companies that allow foreign calls into the United States, to implement a "stir-shaken" caller identification process to reduce the calls. The same technology has been used to reduce spoofed calls. The officials hope the FCC will act within the next 30 days. More than $520 million was lost by Americans to robocall scammers in 2020 alone. "Combatting robocalls requires a three-pronged approach: technology, education, and enforcement," he said. "Stopping illegal robocalls at the border would add a strong enforcement mechanism that should help limit robocalls to New Hampshire residents." Other measures requested include trace back calls within 24 hours for law enforcement or state attorneys general, blocking known illegal or fraudulent callers, and ensuring foreign telephone companies only allow legitimate call numbers. FITN Essay Contest Underway Entrants for the second annual first-in-the-nation primary essay contest are being accepted through April 8. New Hampshire Leadership PAC is sponsoring the contest which encourages students to think creatively about the primary, the state's role, and then 100-year history and heritage of the process. "As a small state, it is an honor and a privilege to be able to bring so many presidential candidates with a vast array of voices to the Granite State every four years," Chris Ager, NH Republican National Committeeman, said. "This next generation of young leaders will be inheriting the First in the Nation tradition, hopefully, and we want to inspire them to not only vote, but to also be actively engaged in the process." The essay contest is available to all high school seniors in the state. Essays should between 500 and 800 words. Winners will be announced May 6, followed by an awards presentation on May 18. Participants are asked to articulate the benefits, to both the state and the nation, of New Hampshire conducting the first-in-the-nation presidential primary. Frank Edelblut, the commissioner of the New Hampshire Department of Education, said the contest provided "a platform for local youth to stress the significance of this tradition and highlight its weight in the road to the presidency," especially since so many other states have attempted to displace New Hampshire's role. He added the announcement of the contests comes just a week after Bill Gardner, a long-time defender of the primary, said he would be stepping down as secretary of state.
