Press release from the City of Evanston: 01/11/2022 10:16 AM With a new year upon us, the City is preparing for some big capital improvement projects throughout Evanston in 2022. From water main rehabilitation to road repairs to sidewalks, residents can look forward to improvements to safety and accessibility. Check out these eight capital improvement projects to keep your eye on this year. 1. 30-inch Water Transmission Main Rehabilitation This project includes the rehabilitation of 8,000 feet of 30-inch diameter water main that serves as the backbone to the transmission network. Funded by a low-interest loan from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, this project is anticipated to be constructed over the next 18 months. Construction will occur in phases and will include a mix of water main lining and open cut excavation. Completion of this project is a significant reliability improvement for the City's water distribution system. 2. Church Street Corridor Improvements The City is in the middle of developing a concept plan for pedestrian and bicycle improvements on Church Street, from McDaniel Avenue to Dodge Avenue, and along the east side of the North Shore Canal, from Church to Dempster Streets. A public meeting to receive feedback and finalize the proposed improvements will be held in the late spring/early summer 2022. The City will then complete the design drawings and apply for funding. Construction is not expected to begin until 2024. 3. Central Street Bridge Improvements Construction on this critical infrastructure project began in 2021 with the replacement and widening of the south half of the Central Street Bridge. Demolition of the north half of the bridge will begin in early 2022. Construction is expected to be completed in the fall. 4. Ridge Avenue Intersection Improvements This project includes traffic signal and alignment improvements to seven signalized intersections on Ridge Avenue, from Church Street to Oakton Street. In response to high accident rates occurring at intersections along Ridge Avenue, the City applied for and received a federal Highway Safety Improvement Program grant to make improvements specifically designed to improve pedestrian and vehicle safety along Ridge. Construction is expected to begin in fall of 2022. 5. New Sidewalk Improvement Program 6. James Park Field Lighting Upgrades 7. Skate Park Planning 8. 36-/42-inch Diameter Water Plant Intake Replacement This press release was produced by the City of Evanston. The views expressed here are the author's own.
