Job Description Summary Working under general supervision, responsible for the collection and processing of general campus waste. Responsible for recycling activities to include cardboard, paper, plastics, and aluminum. Also responsible for furniture and equipment moving, surplus activities, and university event setup and takedown. Essential Functions: Sanitation (Waste and Recycling): Follows routine collection schedules for Waste and/or Recycling at all on and off campus buildings and/or outdoor trash receptacles, including pet waste stations. Collects loose cardboard for drop off at the baler and/or transport cardboard bales to the recycling partner when needed. Assists with loose litter pick-up across campus grounds. Separate recyclables (clear bags) from general waste materials. Ensure recycling is removed from clear bags and placed into the appropriate dumpster. Make sure general trash, cardboard, scrap metal, construction debris and recyclables are disposed of in the correct container in the coal yard. Assists university groups and organizations with waste collection associated with events to include delivering supplies and by making necessary arrangements for collections of waste and leftover materials after the event. Assists university groups and organizations with campus wide recycling projects (Deacs Donate) by making necessary arrangements for collections and deliveries with external partners such as Goodwill. Operate heavy equipment required for loading, compacting, and dumping trash, including hydraulic trash compacting vehicle, forklift, boom lift, and loader. Drive sanitation vehicles, including dump bed pickup truck, box truck, standard size truck, and gas operated ‘golf-cart’ style dump-bed vehicle. Perform inspections on sanitation vehicles and heavy equipment daily prior to use. Report any equipment maintenance needs to Sanitation and/or Fleet manager immediately. Surplus: Assists with moving furniture/equipment needed for faculty and staff work location changes as well as resetting room furniture in residence halls as needed. Assets with event set-ups and takedowns, both on and off campus. Assists with surplus management including the collection, transportation, and delivery of University surplus goods as needed. Assists with maintenance of material control forms for tracking and controlling surplus materials. Operates material handling equipment, to include pallet jacks, cardboard balers, and forklifts. Operate a Large Box Truck used for moving surplus items. Cleans and maintains workspaces and warehouse facilities including sweeping, mopping, dusting, trash removal, bathroom upkeep, and other general maintenance as assigned. Other Functions Is considered an essential employee as designated in the Facilities Management Severe Weather Policy. Is subject to recall after hours in the event of campus emergencies, disasters or other special needs as directed by management. Reports all matters of safety to the appropriate Supervisor and to the Safety Director if necessary. Follows all University and departmental policies and procedures Provides a consistently high level of customer service and possesses strong interpersonal skills to maintain effective working relationships with university customers across all levels. Ability to communicate effectively with those both subtlety and obviously different than oneself. Responsible for keeping work vehicles clean and in good operating condition. May assist in snow and ice removal. Performs other related duties as assigned. Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Ability: High school diploma or GED with one-year related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired. Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing in order to ensure the safe and effective performance of the position. Excellent time management and organizational skills. Must be flexible and adaptable to work as part of an integrated team to achieve goals and objectives. Must be able to meet requirements of the University's automobile insurance. Ability to drive and safely operate heavy equipment required for loading, compacting, and dumping trash, including hydraulic trash compacting vehicles, forklifts, boom lifts, and loaders. Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move furniture and other items. Constant lifting, carrying and bending. Stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, hearing, repetitive motions. Visual acuity, necessary to safely operate motor vehicles, heavy equipment and tools. Subject to outside environmental conditions: extreme heat, cold and atmospheric conditions. Basic understanding and knowledge of techniques, tools and equipment, as well as all required safety precautions. Accountabilities: May occasionally be responsible for the supervision of temporary help.
